Ernest (Ernie) Halperin has been taking photographs of outdoor and eclectic subjects for over 60 years.
Rather than accepting an image as the eye sees it, he strives to render the image as it might be interpreted via an artist’s mind and hand. His objective: to create a work of art from what he sees through the lens. The advent of digital photography and photo-editing software has allowed him to alter his carefully crafted photographs to present a personal (and occasionally whimsical) impression of mood and place. He refers to his unusual final products as “Photo impressions”.
Ernie’s creations are at once familiar and unique. He tries to take advantage of Serendipity (right place – right time) to see beyond the obvious. Often that means “looking right when everyone else is looking left,” to find the unusual among the commonplace.
To enhance the scene, filters (both physical and digital) and other editing tools are employed to give the finished work a distinctive “painterly” look.
